Brothers Paul and Jim Van Doren opened The Van Doren Rubber Company on March 16th, 1966 - uniquely manufacturing shoes at their store and selling them direct to the public. Since child labor laws hadn’t yet been invented, Paul’s son - 11 year old Steve, worked in the backroom for his father and Uncle, helping make some of those 12 shoes that were sold on that first day.
…and the orders quickly piled up.

The waffle sole on Vans shoes quickly became popular for So.Cal. BMXers as much as it did for skaters, making it the Go-to shoe in extreme sports, before the term "extreme sports" was even coined. The familiar tan sole of Vans still grip platform pedals today as well as they did in the early 80's - and it makes handy ODI grip, as well.

Steve Van Doren has retained his family's legacy - working just about every job there is at America’s Most Famous Shoe company - all the way up to his current position as Vans' vice president of Events and Promotions. As the face of the Van Doren family, Steve is a familiar figure with his trademark Hawaiian shirt and contagious excitement for Vans shoes.
