Welcome to the 20's: Silver Dollar Nationals
Welcome to the "Soaring 20's" - as the sport of BMX begins their sixth decade of racing, with the first national of the 2020 season: Vegas' Silver Dollar Nationals!
With a whopping 313 motos on Friday and better yet - 338 for Saturday's race, the sheer number of racers at the SouthPoint Hotel & Casino was a sure sign that USA BMX and the national scene is thriving strong.
Want proof that BMX is on an up-swing?
Here's some #realdata on the season-opener moto-count over the past seven years:
As with all season kick-offs, there's always a ton going on at this first National of the year. New rides, new sponsors, new Pros, new uniforms and all-new hope for a great season that hopefully ends with a Top-10 NAG plate or a big silver No.1 National Championship. of course, with all of the new sponsorships and new uniforms, it's always hard to adjust to the changes.
"Who's that?" ..."Did he turn pro?" ..."What's that team's new colors?!"
Those are just a few of the comments heard around the plush comfy arena seating, as well as from the annoucners and USA BMX staff. Thus, for LV1, we love to start the year off with a Team review.
Here are just a few of the changes that stoff out - and who to watch for in 2020.
SUPERCROSS Other new additions to SX are mini munchkin Ryder Merki (8x) and Womens Pro Shealen Reno who will be reppin SX at pump-tracks and MTB events, as well as at BMX races.

ANSWER Texan Chad Street is almost 100% guaranteed a win in either 41-45x or cruiser (or both). When his Gold's Gym sponsor from last year was in limbo, Answer came-a-knockin'. The ink wasn't even dry on his contract when he arrived in Vegas. Could 2020 be the year that this former No.1 Factory team becomes the ones to beat? We'll soon find out!

PROFILE RACING Rowdy Holzer - the kid with the coolest name in BMX, decided to go with Profile, rather than follow Donavon and his teammates to Hyper. The main reason for going with Profile? "American-made!" said his dad. "We bleed red, white and blue." |

HYPER BMX Hyper Bicycles, and its owner Clay Goldsmid (a former AApro), sell boat-loads of Hyper bikes thru Walmart, and he's been talking about stepping up their game for years now. So, who better to turn to than the King of Team titles; Donavon Long! After parting ways with Wia-Wis, Donavon has brought over many of his former Wia-Whizzers, and nabbed a few additional riders to make a winning team sheet that can rival FullTilt's. Even here in Vegas, Donavon was still on the lookout to fill some gaps, and secured deals with former Throdwn'er Joseph Mather and "The Independent Kid" - Little William Edmonds.

One of the biggest changes in the Pro ranks for 2020 is Olympian holeshotter NIC LONG making the move from Haro to the new Hyper conglomerate.
Nic has been on a Haro for nearly ten years, so trading in his carbon Citizen for an alloy Hyper is a huge change for the former No.1 Am and Pro title contender. The other bonus to this deal is the father/son reunion, with Nic's dad - Donavon, running the Hyper team.
As Grindle likes to say - "Racer's Race." Nic Long has always been known for hitting up regular, non-Pro series races to earn some spare cash, and with his new Hyper deal, you can count on seeing him at more Nationals this year. In Pro Open, two of the three days, Nic was The Man to beat, and got some good comp from the Supercross twins, Maieva and Kam Larsen. J&R's Emelio Falla, a fellow AA-pro to Long, rounded out the podium each day as well.
