Important Racing Rules
There are rules that are heavily enforced at bigger races like Provincial races or National series races. Please check “Getting Started” page and BMX Canada Rulebook. Also ensure your rider understands the following major rules and follows them.
30’ feet rule (from the gate down the start hill)
A rider determined by an official to have intentionally impeded the progress of another rider during the first 30 feet of the race may be disqualified from qualification or moved to last place in a main event situation. To facilitate this rule, it is recommended that a clearly visible line extend across the width of the track, placed at a point 30 feet from the starting gate.
(Moving over is not a foul in and of itself. Intentionally moving over and blocking another rider is the foul.)
- basically, once the gate drops, if there is a rider to either side of you, you MUST stay within your lane until you pass the 30' line. If you are in lane 7 and the nearest rider is in lane 4, you are able to move over within the 30', as you are not impeding another rider.
Last straight rule (similar to 30 feet rule)
When on the final straight, a rider determined by an official to have intentionally impeded the progress of another rider may be disqualified from qualification or moved to last place in a main event situation.
(Moving over is not a foul in and of itself. Intentionally moving over and blocking another rider is the foul.)
- basically, coming out of the last corner, maintain your line to the finish!
Young Rider Assistance Rule
The only riders that may be assisted at the starting gate are those 5 years old and younger. This assistance shall only include the rear wheel being placed between the assistant’s legs. No hands may be used to prop the rider up and any pushing off will result in the rider’s disqualification.
Parents of any rider 6 to 8 years of age may accompany their rider through the staging area. However, these parents are NOT ALLOWED to assist their rider at or on the starting gate. Parents of riders nine years of age and older may accompany their rider through the chutes but must exit the staging area upon exiting the chutes. These same parents may not be at or on the starting gate.
Transfer System
Transfer System is a unique way of qualifying riders from the motos to the main events at each race. With the transfer system, there is a new winner with each moto, thus spreading rider moral while qualifying the winning riders to a main event.
A rider will transfer (qualify) out of his/her respective mottos by attaining an appropriate finish. Qualifying finish spots will be predetermined depending on the number of riders competing in each class, and displayed on the moto sheets.
Once a rider qualifies for a quarter-main, a semi-main or directly to a main event, he/she will not race the remaining qualifying motos, until his/her qualified event.
The following are examples of how the qualifying works:
Class of 3 or fewer riders - 1 group: Total Point System
Race 3 motos. First place counts as 1 point, second place counts as 2 points and third place counts as 3 points. After three rounds of mottos, the rider with the least amount of points will get the overall win for the day.
